The ridge looks painted. Red, mustard, green and white stripes run across the slope. That is Rainbow Mountain, also called Vinicunca or Winikunka, high in the Vilcanota range southeast of Cusco.
This guide is for first-timers. It follows Peru’s official tourism inventory from MINCETUR. It is not the official peru.travel site. Use it to plan altitude, routes and timing before you book a day trip.

Why Rainbow Mountain looks striped
First, the colors come from minerals. MINCETUR links pink and red tones to iron-rich clays. White bands relate to quartz sandstone and limestone-rich rocks. Green comes from iron-magnesium clays. Mustard yellow ties to sulfur-bearing sandstones.
Then tectonics lifted old sediments. Marine, lake and river layers folded upward over a long time. As a result, the stripes sit in plain view instead of staying buried.
Meanwhile, the landscape is high puna. You may see llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, vizcachas and Andean birds. Plants stay low. Ichu grass and cushion plants such as Azorella compacta cope with wind and strong sun.
Also, local communities treat the mountain as a sacred place. The inventory notes spiritual value linked to mountain spirits, or apus. Walk with respect and stay on marked paths.
Cusipata or Pitumarca: which Rainbow Mountain route?
MINCETUR lists two official approaches. Both reach the colored mountain. Yet the day feels different.
Cusipata route (Chillihuani / Llaqto). The viewpoint stands at 5,036 m. Services are stronger here. Parking, toilets and control points appear more often. The hike is shorter and less demanding. MINCETUR records about 3 km on foot, or roughly 1 hour 45 minutes one way. Many first-timers choose this side.
Pitumarca route (Pampachiri / Cayllahuire). This approach feels more remote. Valleys, glacial streams and high pastures dominate the day. The upper viewpoint sits above 5,200 m. The walk is tougher. Some visitors use ATVs where allowed. Choose this side if you want fewer crowds and more effort.
Either way, buy the community ticket at the official control point. Keep your stub until you leave.
Altitude, weather and what to pack
Rainbow Mountain sits far above Cusco. Cusco is already near 3,400 m. The Cusipata viewpoint adds more than 1,600 m on top of that. Therefore, spend at least one or two quiet days in Cusco first.
Nights can drop below freezing on the Pitumarca side. Daytime air may reach the low teens. Dry months from April to October give clearer views. From November to April, clouds or snow can hide the stripes.
Pack layers, a windproof jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, snacks and water. Wear broken-in shoes. Move slowly. If headache or nausea grows, stop and go down. Read our altitude sickness guide before the trip.
How to fit Rainbow Mountain into a Cusco plan
Most visitors leave Cusco before dawn. The road time alone can take a few hours, depending on the route and stops. Then comes the hike. Plan a full day and a quiet evening afterward.
If this is your first time in the city, start with our first day in Cusco tips. After you feel steady, add Rainbow Mountain. You can also pair the Andes with English-language Cusco and Machu Picchu packages from Fullviajes.
Ausangate may appear on clear days from the higher viewpoints. Even so, do not treat Rainbow Mountain as a warm-up for long treks. It is already a high outing on its own.
Practical tips for your first Rainbow Mountain day
Start with breakfast and water before the van leaves. Eat light food that you already tolerate at altitude. Then keep sipping on the road.
On the trail, use a slow steady pace. Count steps if you need a rhythm. Sit down if dizziness appears. Guides often carry oxygen, yet your best tool is still an early exit when your body says stop.
Photography works best with side light. Midday sun can flatten the stripes. Morning visits within the official hours usually help. Stay behind any ropes or stone markers set by the community.
Finally, carry a small bag for your own trash. There are few bins at 5,000 m. Leaving wrappers behind harms both the pasture and the communities that host the route.
Tickets, communities and respect
Entrance is managed with local community tickets. Pay only at official control points. Keep the stub until you exit. Random sellers on the highway are not the same thing.
Greet staff and follow their directions. Horses or ATVs may appear on some stretches. Give them room. The pasture supports local herds, so stay on the path even when the photo looks better off-trail.
Before you head out to Rainbow Mountain
In short, Vinicunca rewards patience more than speed. Sleep in Cusco first. Pick Cusipata if you want the shorter walk. Go early within the 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. window. Leave no trash. Then the striped ridge will feel earned, not rushed.
